1. The pure wick catheter is intended for use in patients experiencing urinary incontinence.

2. In order to avoid potential injury upon removal, gently pull the external catheter directly outward. Ensure suction is maintained while removing

3. External catheter must be replaced if soiled with feces or blood.

4. An assessment must be completed by the nurse at the time of catheter initiation/change.

5. This catheter does not require a physician’s order—it is up to the nurse’s discretion.

6. We must assess the perineal area/skin for compromise and perform perineal care, prior to reapplying the external catheter.

7. I do not have to check the patient regularly for incontinence, once the external catheter is applied.

8. Once applied the catheters are connected to suction.

9. Catheters need to be changed every shift. The CNA or nurse may perform the change, but the nurse is responsible for ensuring the catheter has been changed.

10. The external catheters should not be used on patients with urinary retention, or those who require indwelling catheters.
